Feeling of a blocked ear

Because the various passages in the head and neck are all connected, including your ears, a feeling of having a blocked ear can actually be caused by a variety of different things. Some of these are very minor and will either go away on their own or be cleared with very simple treatments. In rarer cases, and particularly when accompanied by pain or when it persists for a long time, it can be a sign of a more serious problem.

What are some possible causes?

  • Impacted ear wax.

  • Fluid in the ear, which can be common after bathing or swimming.

  • An infection either of the ear or the sinuses.

  • In rare cases, cancer of the throat or lymph node.

  • Noise damage.

  • Meniere’s disease.

  • Anxiety and stress.

What can I do about it?

  • Chewing or yawning will often help if the problem is minor or temporary.

  • Holding your nose and blowing out through your nose slowly and gently. Caution: do not do this hard or rapidly, as it can cause further damage. Note this should not cause pain.

  • If you suspect it to be caused by fluid, it can often be cleared by tilting your head and pulling gently on the earlobe.

  • A warm compress can sometimes open up the ear canals, freeing liquid or other blockages.

  • Avoid ‘do it yourself’ fixes such as cotton swabs and ear candles, as misuse can cause further damage.

If you are concerned, you are in pain, or your symptoms persist for several days without an obvious cause, we recommend seeking the diagnosis of a medical professional. Book an appointment with our team.
