Problems with your voice

Your voice is a valuable tool used daily and so it can be frustrating when a cold or illness prevents you from being able to exercise it. Inflammation of your voice box due to overuse, infection, or irritation is called ‘laryngitis’ and usually passes after two weeks at most.

What are the symptoms of laryngitis?

  • A sore throat.

  • Hoarseness.

  • A weak or lost voice.

  • A need to constantly clear your throat.

In children, they can experience a high temperature and a weak appetite.

This condition can often be easily managed at home by giving your voice a rest, keeping your fluid intake up, and gargling warm salty water. You can speak to your pharmacist for further treatments, such as lozenges.

However, see your GP if your voice problems persist. If your child is having difficulties breathing due to their voice problems, seek an emergency appointment. They will carry out some tests to determine the cause of your laryngitis. They may refer you to an ear, nose and throat specialist if the problem is more significant.

Our ear, nose, and throat consultant is well-experienced in treating laryngitis and other voice problems. Book an appointment.
