Tonsillitis

Tonsils can be found at the back of the throat. As part of the lymphatic system, their main duty is to guard the body against infection. However, they can themselves become infected. This condition is more prevalent in children, but adults can also suffer from it. It is not contagious, but often the bacteria or viruses that have infected it can be passed on so it is recommended that handwashing is practised regularly and children do not attend school until it passes.

What are the symptoms of tonsillitis?

  • Red and swollen throat.

  • High temperature.

  • A sore throat.

  • Difficulty eating and swallowing.

  • Loss of voice.

  • A headache.

  • Earache.

  • Tiredness.

  • Bad breath.

  • A white or yellow coating of the throat.

How can you treat this condition?

  • Take lots of rest.

  • Take common painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.

  • Gargle warm salty water.

See a GP if pus can be seen inside the throat, if it is difficult to eat or drink, or if the symptoms last longer than 4 days. Often, a swab test for bacteria will be taken as well as a blood test.

It is now a rare occurrence for tonsils to be surgically removed and this is done only if it is a severe case of tonsillitis. If the condition worsens, it may be ‘quinsy’ in which case emergency care is needed.

Our consultant is very experienced in the diagnosis of these conditions and also in the removal of tonsils. Book an appointment through our team.
