Tonsil stones

Tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths, are formations found at the back of your mouth that are usually of a cheesy consistency, but can also be hardened lumps. They are a buildup of food, dead cells and mucus which have come to the surface after being trapped within the small crevices of your tonsils. They are either white or yellow in appearance and can range in size.

Although this condition is not a significant health hazard, it can be an unpleasant experience. The gradual buildup can sometimes cause swelling inside the mouth and throat as well as other uncomfortable symptoms.

Symptoms of tonsil stones:

  • Bad breath.

  • Sore throat.

  • Ear pain.

  • Difficulty swallowing.

  • White or yellow ‘stones’ inside the throat, which may be coughed up.

How can this condition be avoided?

  • Practice good dental hygiene.

  • Stop smoking.

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Gargle salt water.

Tonsil stones can be removed at our clinic by an experienced consultant. This is done under local anaesthetics. It is not sensible to try and remove tonsil stones yourself as tonsils are sensitive and likely to be damaged this way, so book an appointment if you are concerned.
