Snoring and sleep apnoea

Approximately 25% of people snore overall, but this is not necessarily a health problem. Snoring does become more of a health concern the heavier it gets and it may be an indicator of sleep apnoea - a chronic condition that translates as ‘no breath’.

Symptoms of sleep apnoea:

  • Tiredness due to waking up a lot in the night.

  • Loud snoring while sleeping.

  • Gasping or choking noises while sleeping.

  • Headaches.

Without treatment, you will face sleep disruption and this could greatly affect your quality of life and increase the risk of common illnesses, such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes. Those who feel especially tired throughout the day because of this are more prone to accidents.

An assessment of what is causing the disturbed sleep can be taken by our consultant, who will check whether the issue is due to nasal obstruction, alcohol or sedative medication use, or weight gain. If sleep apnoea is suspected, a home sleep study will be offered to analyse the sleep problem further.

Surgery or positive pressure mask treatment are options that are available for more severe cases. Book an appointment to understand your options.
