Neck lumps

Large or small lumps in the neck are not necessarily an indication of a serious health issue. Often the masses can be benign, but in some instances they could be as significant as cancer or a bad infection. These lumps can occur in many places around the neck region and could grow large enough to affect breathing as well as confidence.

What are some possible causes of neck lumps?

  • Tonsillitis.

  • Dental infections.

  • Strep throat.

  • Swollen lymph nodes.

  • A bacterial or viral infection.

  • Mumps.

  • Lipoma.

  • Rubella.

  • Hodgkin’s Disease.

  • Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

  • Thyroid goitre.

  • Thyroid cancer.

  • Throat cancer.

  • Melanoma.

A thorough investigation is needed to get a good diagnosis of the swollen lump, which can be done via ultrasound as well as a physical check-up. If further assessment is needed, then a CT or MRI scan can be conducted to determine what the issue is. Certain masses may need surgical treatment, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy.
