Nasal septum deviation

Nasal septum deviation is caused when the thin wall, which separates the nostrils, is bent or twisted. This normally straight structure may have been altered naturally or through injury, causing one of the nasal passages to be narrower than the other. This condition can affect breathing and sleep and have a negative effect on day-to-day quality of life.

Symptoms of nasal septum deviation:

  • Difficulty breathing at night.

  • Loud snoring.

  • Struggling with breath during exercise.

  • Congestion in one or both nostrils.

  • Relying on breathing through your mouth.

Although this condition is not harmful, it can affect your quality of life. The only treatment is an operation called a ‘septoplasty’, which is carried out under general anaesthetic. This procedure, which is commonly practiced by our consultant, will require at least a week for recovery. It is not carried out on children.

If you are experiencing ongoing issues due to this condition, you can book an appointment with our consultant today.
