The ‘globus’ sensation

This sensation is a common one where an individual feels there is a mass pressing on their throat or a tightness of the muscles in the area without there actually being a lump present. It is usually anxiety or stress-related, but other possible causes include acid reflux or postnasal drip, which is when mucus runs down from the nose into the back of the throat.

How can I reduce this sensation?

  • Drink lots of water during the day and especially with foods that are dry.

  • Try to stay calm in stressful situations, but allow yourself to cry to ease this feeling.

An assessment of your wellbeing as well as endoscopy in the clinic normally helps narrow down the cause of the problem if it persists. Book an appointment with our experienced consultant.
