Allergies

Allergies are very common and are mostly a bad reaction to food or to a certain substance. Reactions can range from mild, which can be kept under control, to more severe, in which case immediate medical attention is urgently needed. Allergies tend to be more present in children, but they can develop later on in life or disappear as you age.

What can trigger an allergic reaction?

  • Food - the most common being dairy, nuts, eggs, fish and shellfish, soy, wheat, and corn.

  • Pollen, known as hayfever.

  • Animal fur or skin.

  • Chemicals found in cleaning or beauty products.

  • Medicines.

  • Latex.

  • Mould and other types of fungi.

What are the symptoms of allergies?

  • Sneezing.

  • A sore or itchy rash.

  • Coughing or difficulty breathing.

  • A blocked or runny nose.

  • Itchy or watering eyes.

In more severe cases, the individual may go into what is called ‘anaphylactic shock’ where their blood pressure rapidly drops and causes their airways to tighten and restrict normal breathing. If this medical emergency is left untreated it could become fatal.

If you think you or your child may have an allergy, you should consult your GP who will provide advice if a mild allergy is detected. Mild allergies can be avoided mainly through careful management of diet or product use.

If the problem is more severe, you will be referred to a specialist. Our consultant will be able to diagnose and provide useful information and treatment for allergies. Get in touch with our team to book an appointment.
