Infected adenoids

Adenoids are simply part of the immune system that fight off bacteria and viruses and are located in the throat, just behind the nose. They start off large when you are a child and gradually shrink with age. These infection fighters can sometimes become infected themselves, which is more often the case in children.

What are the symptoms of infected adenoids?

  • Breathing difficulties.

  • Disturbed sleep.

  • Ear problems.

  • Swollen glands.

  • A constant running nose.

  • Some facial pain.

  • Speech becoming nasally-sounding.

If serious, an operation (known as an adenoidectomy) may be the best solution to remove the infected adenoids. This is done under general anaesthetics. Sometimes tonsils are removed along with the infected adenoids (known as a tonsillectomy).

The recovery time for such operations is usually about a week and there is no need to worry about whether removing adenoids will impact immunity - the body has many other ways of tackling infection.
